HD and 3D Technologies to Advance Growth in Consumer Electronics Market

CEMC’s “2010 Consumer Electronics Market Trends and Forecast” Report Now Available; Includes Digital Imaging Data from CITA

Toronto, ON, April 29, 2010 – Consumer Electronics Marketers of Canada (CEMC)—an Electro-Federation Canada (EFC) council—and the Canadian Imaging Trade Association (CITA), announce the release of the newly-published report, 2010 Consumer Electronics Market Trends and Forecast. This report provides an overview of past, current and future trends in the Canadian consumer electronics market. Data is collected from CEMC’s and CITA’sstatistical programs, which gather, analyze, and report data on leading consumer electronics categories.

“The past year has given way to many “firsts” in our market—while expected, these “firsts” are challenging,” says Robert Gumiela, Chair, CEMC Executive Committee; Director of Marketing, Samsung Electronics Canada Inc. “For the first time since its inception, the Flat Panel category did not exceed the previous year’s volume. Also, fewer digital cameras were purchased by Canadian consumers this year than in the previous year, due in large to consumers’ practiced restraint with household spending. However, with the surfacing of new and enhancedtechnologies such as 3D and HD, the outlook for growth in our market looks promising.”

In the digital imaging market, CITA reports a further decline in shipments of digital cameras, but expects the Digital Single-lens Reflex (DSLR) camera segment to increase 6.7% to 345,000 units over pervious year shipments. This increase is expected as more consumers feel the need to expand their picture-taking horizons and demand bothgreater versatility and quality.

In the Canadian television market, CEMC reports a decline in the Flat Panel market, down -4.6% as at the end of the third quarter. Surging fourth quarter sales minimized the gap to a modest -1.7% decrease from the previous year. CEMC’s 2010 Flat Panel forecast shows slight growth of 1.9% over 2009, with a forecast of 2,950,000 unit shipments in 2010, compared to 2,895,000 in 2009. The industry remains optimistic because there will be more choices for the consumer in Flat Panel Television in 2010. 3D has also become a mainstay option for many newtheatrical releases, fuelling consumers to buy 3D-ready Flat Panels.
